   The Sparrowhawk is perhaps the most common of the predatory or carnivorous birds. It is much the same shape and size as the cuckoo for which it is often mistaken. It is however easily distinguished from the latter when it begins to hover which it does very frequently. Hawks are not common. Perhaps the efforts made by gamekeepers and others to shoot them and to destroy their nests is responsible for this. The hawk as a neighbour is not esteemed even among the feathered tribes.

   It makes its nest usually in remote and almost inaccessible spots.
