  1. The greater part of the year people used no artificial light. They retired early to bed and rose early. Then again the the grown-ups after the children had retired for the night sat round the peat fire and spun stories with no other light than that from the pleasant turf fire. Very pleasant and nice it was.
    The rush candle, "the dip" and the bogdeal (giumais) were the usual kinds of artificial light. For the first the rushes were cut and the bundle hung from one of the rafters to dry. They were then peeled with the exception of a strip in each about one eighth of an inch wide for strength from top to bottom. They were dipped in melted fat and hung in bundles
