There is another thing called "earnest". If a man bought an animal and if he hadn't the money at the time he would have to pay earnest. When he gives the earnest the seller is sure of the rest of the money as well.
When animals are sold they are marked. When the mark is on the animals they cannot be sold so well again. Some people blacken the part of the pigs where the mark is if they are selling them twice. The buyers mark pigs with a scissors. They put a cut on their backs. They mark cattle and sheep with paint. Horses are not marked at all.- Collector
