- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Sticking Potatoes : This method of sowing potatoes is used in small gardens. The ridges are scored in the usual way, then the farmers stick the spade into the clay and at the back of it he inserts a slit covering it with clay. The manure is put on when the little stalks appear above ground. This method holds good for small gardens where the soil is fairly rich. Most of the work here is done with the spade. The spades are bought in the local shops. It is no customary here for neighbours to help one another in farming work. A farmer who hasn't enough of men has to hire workers.
Moulding and Spraying.
When the little green stalks appear above ground they are moulded. This is done with the spade or shovel, the clay is put round the young stalks and occasionally bag manure is added. May is the month for this work. When the stalks are high any weeds in the ridges are pulled out and in June or early July the crop is sprayed. The spray is a mixture of blue-stone and washing soda. A large barrel is filled 2/3 with water. A flat board is placed across the mouth, the blue-stone is put in a coarse but of canvas, lied to the board and allowed to sink partly under the water. To this liquid the melted washing soda is added. The spray is put on with the budget[?] which is strapped on to the workers back.
