- The cakes that were made in olden times were Boxty cake, Oatmeal cake, potato-cake and Soda-cake.
Bread was made from oats. Wheat and other grain was grown locally. Querns were used locally for grinding the corn. They were worked as follows: Those grinding the corn got two flat stones with two stones in one of them, a big hole and a small one.
Then they would put a stick in the big hole. The stone with the holes was put on the top of the other. Then they twisted the stick while another person put the corn into the small hole until all the corn was crushed.
To make potato-cake the potatoes were peeled and mashed. Salt and water were added and it was made into farrells. Then they were cooked and served hot.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
