   When it is going to rain the sky is very dull and heavy and a strong south or south-east wind is blowing. The cows and horses come in from the open fields and seek shelter by the high fences. The dogs and cats come to the fire and turn their backs to it. The sun is very pale when it sets and when a circle is seen round the moon rain is not far off. A storm is sure to blow if the sun sets very red and people who live in the country know if a storm is coming when they hear the storm-cock or jay-thrush singing in the tree tops. Old people say that when the timber crackles in the fire a storm is near.
   The signs of snow are - very cold and piercing wind and black clouds in the sky.
   The birds do not like snow and are seen sheltering under hedges and in old out-houses.
   "A rainbow in the morning is the shepherd's warning,
   A rainbow at night is the shepherd's delight"
