The lime kiln is a common place for a smoke and a chat for the local men and very often there are thirty or forty men gathered together. As it is always very hot it is especially liked in the cold wintry nights. Sometimes the fumes from the kiln are very dangerous for they give off a sulphuric gas which is deadly poison.
