The shawls are greatly worn in this district. Many of the women wear shawls going to Chapel and also to town. It is usual to see girls going to the shop wearing shawls but they wear coats going to Prayers and also to the town. Up to very lately the girls wore shawls to dances etc. The shawls are all black.
Martéens were greatly worn in olden times. They were made of wool. They were knitted like a pair of stockings having legs with the tops of the feet but without soles. Then loops were made to fasten around the toes. The Marteens protected the legs and the tops of the feet from the storm, but the soles had to suffer.
At a marriage the Bride used to wear a shawl. Often girls were known to get the loan of a hat for the Wedding Day.
