- In olden times people only ate three meals a day. These were breakfast, dinner, and supper. The breakfast was partaken of about seven o clock in the morning. It was customary to do a certain amount of work before breakfast. Cows were milked and poultry fed. Horses were fed and harnessed ready for the days work. Sometimes the farmers did an hours work in the field before breakfast. This custom is still alive and hired farm servants are required to milk and do odd jobs about the farm.
For breakfast the took oaten meal porride ans sweet milk and sometimes buttermilk or oaten bread and milk. For dinner they took fish and potatoes or meat. Sometimes the family sat around a large wooden tray on the centre of the floor. The tray which was about two feet wide and three feet long was supported by chairs. Wooden bouls were sometimes used.
Boxty bread was often made and eaten before flour came into use. It was made from the starch of potatoes. There were then washed and grated(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
