- Long ago the old people made their own candles out of the tallow of a cow. They made small ones and large ones generally twelve in a pound weight.
My Granda and Grandma made their own candles, they bought skiens of cotton thread and put about six threads together and dipped it in the hot tallow until they got it the right thickness.
This tallow was put into a pot of water; then the tallow floated on the top to let them draw their wick in and out until their candle was made.
They had to put lard or fresh butter through the tallow to keep it from breaking.
