The castle of Moross belonged to the McSwineys. All that remains of the castle is a high piece of wall like a pillar.
The ruins of the castle stand out like a little island surrounded by the waters of Mulroy bay, quite close to the Moross ferry.
The largest of the islands on the ferry was the burying ground of the McSwineys. My Grandfather John McKemey when labouring this island often dug up bones. One time he dug up a Cannon ball and a battle axe.
He, thinking these were of little value threw them into the sea and was sorry afterwards as he would liked to have kept them or sold them to some Irish museum.
The mortar used in the building of Moross castle was lime mixed with goat's milk and what remains of it now is so firm and hard that it is imposible to pick a stone from it.
