- Old Schools.
In olden times there were some hedge schools in our district. Some of the hedge schools were in an out house. Master Patton was the name of one of the teachers. He taught the children in his own house. The parents had to pay the teachers for their children's instruction. The subjects taught in the schools were Grammar, Geography, and Singing. The teachers never spoke Irish. Sometimes writing was done with pens, and sums were done on slates with slate pencils. The children were seated on forms in the schools. There were two tables in the schools. There were holes in the tables which the ink bottles were left on. There was one blackboard in the school. Some of the teachers taught for a year in one school and some taught for two years in the same schools.- Bailitheoir
