- We have heard our forefathers talking about the Great Famine of 1846 and 1847. It affected the district very much. The district was very thickly populated before the Famine came. Some people still point our views of houses, but they are all in ruins now. The potatoes were very small in the years of the Famine. The potatoes decayed in the ground. The potatoes were about the size of berries, and what a man dug in one day, he could carry them in, in one hand in a little bag at night. The potatoes were planted in ridges in those times. The people used oaten porridge, oaten bread and thick milk instead of potatoes. A great many people died of hunger during the Famine.
