    The famine was caused by the potato crop failing. It happened in the years 1845 to 1848, but the worst years were 1847 and 1848. It was caused by blight coming on the potatoes during growth. That was the beginning of the blight in Ireland. It was a disease that came on the potatoes and in those days the people had no remedies as we have nowadays. The people knew nothing about spraying. The majority of the people of Ireland were living mainly on potatoes before that so when the potatoes were scarce they got very little to eat. They had no food to eat, nor money to buy any, and they gathered weeds, which they boiled, put salt on and ate.
