- Our churn is about three and a half feet high, nearly two feet wide at the top and wider at the bottom. It has round sides. It is about eight years old. My mother does the churning with a churn staff. We do the churning about once a week in the winter time and twice in summer. We put boiling water into the churn in the winter time and almost cold water in summer. It takes about one hour to churn to bring the butter. The butter is taken off the milk and put into a wooden dish used for that purpose. Then it is washed and salted and made into pound prints or blocks. The milk left, which is called buttermilk is used for baking bread, and other purpses and is also very wholesome to drink.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
