- Some of the local sayings, regarding the weather are as follows:-
When the cat sits with her back to the fire in winter, it is the sign of a snow storm.
If the blazes in the fire turn blue, it is the sign of frost.
When the sheep grazing on the hills come down to the low ground, or, if in the fields, they gather together behind the hedge, it is a sign that a storm is coming soon.
Signs of rain:- when the smoke rises straight into the air out of the chimney, it shows that rain is coming.
If clouds of midges gather round as in the air and bite sharply, it is another sign of rain.
A dog, seen chewing grass in the evening, shows that rain is coming.
If the far off hills look near, it is another sign of rain.
