1. Domestic Animals

   The domestic animals we have at home are the horses, cows, calves, pigs sheep and dogs. There are two horses, four calves, five cows, two pigs a flock of sheep and two dogs. The names of the two horses are Maggie and Bobbie. The names of the two dogs are Prince and Laddie. When driving a horse the people say "Gee up" and when they want a horse to stop they say "whoa". When calling hens they say "chuck chuck".
   The cow house is called a byre. It is built of stone and lime and has a slate roof. There are eleven stands inside the byre and every stand holds two cattle. The floor and the stands are built of cement also the troughs of the cattle to eat out of. There are three doors and two windows in the byre. Each cow is tied round the neck with a chain. If a cow will not stay in the field a piece of tin is tied on it horns and it hangs down over the cows eyes so that the cow can see nothing but the ground.
   In olden times if a person met a white cow or horse they would return to the house and not go to work that day.
   To hatch eggs from twelve to fifteen
