    put a small loop on it and slipped it over one of the buttons. After a while, the woman rose to go home, but found she could not proceed more than a few inches from the bed. She, therefore, came to the conclusion that she was being held back by some Unknown or Supernatural power, and at once became hysterical. The inmates rushed immediately to the spot, and it was not long till they found out the trick. This is typical of what the mischief-makers (locally named "heerum-sheerums") used to do.
    At present, these games are abolished, and the "wakes" are carried out in a way becoming to the occasion. The "wakes" are held for two nights. During this time, the "dead house" or "corp house", is continually filled with sympathising neighbours. There is always a good supply of clay-pipes, tobacco,and snuff, and these are "handed round" at various intervals during the night.
