   his bed spread for the night
   For being fatigued in mind and limb was anxious to retire
   With pistol charged he sank to rest beside the dying fire.

   And scarcely had the fugitive succumbed to slumber deep
   When through the door the traitor slunk and finding him asleep
   He cautiously the pistol drew from 'neath the sleeper's head
   Removed the flint and powder and from the cabin fled.

   Oblivious of the passing hours enwrapped in sleep profound
   Magennnis lay beside the hearth, a faint ominous sound,
   Of marching men disturbed his rest he scrambled to the floor
   As Balfour and a yeoman guard burst through the cabin door.

   With fearless mien and scornful look he faced that armed band
