Homemade Toys.Homemade toys are seldom seen nowadays, but long ago all the toys used by the children were made in the homes. They were generally made from rags or carved out of wood or turnips
One of the best toy makers of best toy makers of this district died about twenty years ago. His name was Peter Sleven. He lived in Hampton where he worked. He was an expert at making dancing masters as he used to call them. Mr. Gaynor told us that he often saw Peter dancing one of his dolls, and it was wonderful the steps the doll gave, and Peter diddling the tunes, it was wonderful the jigs and hornpipes he could make the doll dance. In this district children make bubbling pipes carved from raw potatoes and the stalk of hefferans is used as a shank. There were fiddle makers in this district long ago but they all died except one man whose name is Tom Howard. he lives in Balscadden.
