- The people of this district in olden times used to make their own flour and bread. They made the flour out of the wheat they grew on their farm. They made the wheaten meal out of what also. With these they made bread. Bread was baked on the griddle. Oaten bread and rye bread was used. Potato cake was nearly always eaten in every home. When they were making the bread they used to mix the dough in a big wooden bowl and stir it with a wooden spoon. When the people of this district are making their bread on the pan, on the griddle or in an oven they nearly always make a cross on the cake before they put it on to cook.
