- The kind of bread used in this district in former times, was potato cake, boxty bread, and pea bread. Bread was made from oats grown locally. The flower (sic) was made locally. People remember querns being used in this district. Potato cakes were made from potatoes, and salt. First the potatoes were boiled, and then they were broke up. Boxty bread was make by scooping raw potatoes, and then baked. Oaten bread, and rye bread were made from oaten meal and water or rye and water, and were baked in a griddle.
