- In the Penal Times
Long ago penal laws were severe laws, that were imposed on the Catholics of Ireland. Churches were knocked and the priests were either killed or turned out.
They had to read Mass on the hill-side and hide themselves in the woods.
Some of the catholics were driven out of their homes, and became slaves for their enemies.
There was a reward given for every priest’s head. There was an old convent at the back of Toghergar chapel, and the priests read mass in it.
When the soldiers were going on the road they could not see it as it was in a very lonesome place.
A person would get a reward if he told where a priest was hidden but the people would not tell.
Gowla is a very lonesome place and it is about two miles from any public road.
It is said that the priest said Mass in it. Now a priest goes to Mass(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
