Marblehill and it's AntiquitiesThe most interesting spot in the parish of Ballinakill is Marblehill. It lies on the east side of Drim School, and about eight miles in a southerly direction from the town of Loughrea. The demesne consists of a vast tract of reclaimed land, which is mostly undulating.
Three divisions are made of this estate; “Carrigín, Górt na Cupóg, and Ceathramhadh Ruadh”. “Carrigín”, or the little rock, received its name from the rocks that extend over acres and which are forty or fifty feet high in places. From the top of one of the rocky elevations a glorious view is obtainable, especially on an autumn day, like this. In the openings of the rocks, huge forest trees are growing. “Górt na Cupóg” got its name from the cupóg plant, which grew abundantly there, and which is visible at the present day. “Ceathramhadh Ruadh”, which means the Reddish Quarter, got its name from the ferns and the heather that grow there, three or four feet high.
The Burkes of Marblehill, who came over from England, perhaps in eleven-sixty-six, bought this land. It is supposed that they found six barrels of gold hidden under a monastery in Grallagh, which lies on the road between Marblehill, and Loughrea. This monastery existed up to two hundred years ago, and the holy men probably hid their treasures of gold under ground, to save it from the robbers or enemies.
With this gold, the Burkes bought this tract(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
