- The houses of the older times were the same as the houses of the present day. These houses were thatched. They used to get the thatch from oaten straw. There was a bed in the kitchen. It was placed by the side wall of the house, this bed was called a settle bed. The fire place was always at the gable end of the house. The front of the chimney was made of wattles and clay and some old hay. There were also windows without glass and there was timber in its place. The old floors were made from clay and dó-buidhe. Half doors were common in the district. Dale boards were used for the fire. Chips of dale were used for light. The old people had no candles, but they had rushes dipped in lard for candles.
