The old people used to say that a member of the Laurence family, who was an Admiral, brought home from foreign parts the gold that built and furnished it. Certainly it was a fine residence and very well laid out gardens and walks. A Prince of Wales once stayed as a guest in the house it must be in the Admiral's time. A Laurence commanded a corp of volunteers at the time they were organised all over Ireland during the war with America. There was a large oil painting in the house representing a review of the volunteers by one of the De Borgas.They had a great love of art. The house was a store of paintings and works of art.
