    trouble, Brendan encouraged and exhorted his little band in their hazardous undertaking. At length after a voyage of forty days, when the provisions were nearly consumed, an island appeared towards it.
    On sailing close up to the island no landing place was discovered, consquently a circuit of the island was decided upon. Noonday on the third day saw the vessel entering a small cove surrounded by rocks of wonderful steepness. Brendan blessed the landing place, and the little company came ashore. A dog led the company to "a large mansion, laid out with couches and seats, and water for washing the feet." The ancient chronicle further informs us that "the mansion where they abode had its walls hung around with vessels made of various metals, with bridle-bits and horns inlaid with silver." Brendan entered the house, where a meal "with white loaves and fish" was found ready for the pilgrims. The saint blessed the repast, and the brethren having eaten retired to rest.
    During the night Brendan remained on his knees in prayer imploring the blessing of God on the mission. For threas days the nights the pilgrims remained on this resting-place, and on the fourth morning embarked on their journey, having been provided with
