    came to the island of Saint Ailbe.
    A striking account of the daily life of this community is given in Brendaniana; and Brendan stayed in company with the abbot and monks until the feasts of the Nativity and Epiphany were over. The pilgrims left the saintly brothers of Patrick and Ailbe and began their journey towards the western seas; the vessel "without the use of oar or sail, drifted about in various directions, until the beginning of Lent." Several other islands were visited by the saint and his companions, but no delay was made on such resting-places, as the rigours of the extreme western journey had yet to be faced. On one of these islands Brendan and his brethren celebrated with great diligency the festival of the Passion of the Saviour, afterwards proceeding on their voyage.
    Onwards still, ever facing the day -got of their Milesian ancestors, the little barque became the sport of the waves and winds, and the hardy sailor- monks endured all the dangers and hardships of primitive travel. At length the barque was driven back to the island called the Paradise of Birds - so called from the number of snow-white
