    cast himself prostrate on the ground, and gave praise to the Creator of mankind. The man of God left this place of refuge and spent forty days on the trackless waste of the western ocean. The text Brendaniana gives a vivid and marvellous account of the many wonders of the ocean, the frightful and hideous monsters of the deep which threatened the boat with destruction; and the miraculous feeding of the brethren in days of want and stress.
    The same volume further informs us that Brendan spent three months on an island "for violent storms prevailed at sea, and severe stress of weather from hail and rain."
    Afterwards the boat sailed close to an island of volcanic formation, and Brendan told his brethren that this place was the home of lost souls. "Soldiers of Christ", said Brendan to his monks, "be strong in faith, unfeigned in the armour of the Spirit, for we are now on the confines of Hells, watch, therefore, and act manfully."
    Soon, however, the journey of the man of God and his courageous brethern was brought to a successful and triumphant conclusion. After many dangers and difficulties the barque
