  1. Old Songs Never Published

Farewell to Helvin's tranquil shore where oftimes I have strayed.

The following poem was composed by Miss McGowan of Mullinaleck Kinlough about Lough Melvin in or about 1856 and used to be sung in this neighborhood when our fathers were young. This Miss McGowan's father was one of the old Hedgeschoolmasters who taught school not far from the village of Kinlough in Co. Leitrim.

    Melvins Waters Blue
Farewell to Melvin's tranquil shore where oftimes I have strayed.
In pensive thought by bray or brake. I've sauntered in the shade.
Or strove my best in joyous mood to catch the trout and eel.
I know when far in distand lands how lonely I must feel.
No more I'll tread the radient path, no more I'll see or hear.
The trush in grove beyond the lake pour forth its notes so clear.
Nor fondly gaze on each dear scene the scenes that well I knew.
For I must say farewell to all around and Melvin's Water's Blue.
