- It is an old custom that when a person dies the clock is stopped and the cat is put outside because people say that if a cat crosses the corpse it a sign that there will soon be another death in that house. Long ago on the night of the wake all the people sang old Irish songs and drank whiskey and smoked clay pipes. On the day of the funeral all the women from the place came to the house and cried until the funeral went out of sight.
