- In this district long ago the people made oaten-bread, potato cake and boxty for their meals. The oat-bread (as it was called) was made from oatmeal which was ground in the local mill. This meal was coarse, but healthy. The meal was mixed in a basin with salt and water; when a firm mixture was obtained it was put on to a bread-board and bruised into a large flat cake about a half inch in thickness. This was baked in front of the fire; it was left resting against the lid of a can on a big flag and turned occasionally, until baked.
