Limekiln; the benches they used were made of mud with boards laid on top of them. The blackboard they used was a large flag-stone and they used slate pencils. The master's name was Frank O'Connor from Ballyduff and he slapped the boys with a sally twig.
There was a hedge school up in Dromin Listowel and it was taught by a man by the name of Martin Conway and he taught under a bush and a fever broke out in the school and when it was gone they appointed a nurse to visit the hedge-school and there was a well near bush where Martin taught. One day the nurse came and the boys were very dirthy and she took each one to the well and made them wash their ears and neck and face and hands.

  2. My mother Kitty Frances, Ballybunion told me that long ago there was no National Schools but Hedge School and my mother and Father went to a Hedge School in Kissanes field, Francis Road. The names of the teachers were Ned Scandlon and his wife's name is Mary Scandlon and they taught under two bushes. "The Bed Bush" and "The green bush". Each boy had a turn of making ink and if they did not know how to do it they would get three slaps of a blackthorn stick. The way they made the ink was they put the skins of the sloes into a bottle and left there for about a week and it turned into ink.
