- There were a lot of old customs at wakes long ago in Ireland and these are some of them.
1. When the people would go into a corpse house all the best people at crying would all start crying.
2. Pipes, tobacco, and snuff were given out at wakes.
3. A white shroud was put on the dead person.
4. The young people would have a white coffin and the old people would have a black coffin.
5. The people would not go home alone on the night of the wake.
6. The people used to be firing the pipes at one another at the wake.
7. It would not be right to refuse anything you would get at a wake.
