- Matchmaking is still carried on, to a great extent in many parts of Ireland, and in our district it has not died out completely. I have heard how they do it.
When a man wanted to have his daughter married to a certain young man of good means, and in every way suitable, he just had a word with the matchmaker of the district after night fall. This match-maker provided with a bottle of whiskey in his pocket, and his shillelagh in his hand, went to the young man's house.
Over the bottle everything was discussed, from the qualities of the young pair in(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
