    millions of serpents. In the fight that followed the bed of the Shannon was widened there, and that was the cause of the present Lough Ree. The eel defeated the serpents and he went on his way.
    When he came to Lough Derg he was again attacked by serpents, where another battle took place with the same results. From this on he had no trouble, and consquently he made the Shannon wider than ever. But water from the Shannon Pot followed in is tract and formed the river Shannon. When he went out into the sea he met a mermaid. He swallowed a boat load of men, and when the mermaid said it was not right to do it, he went to eat her, but she struck him in the eye with a poisoned comb, and blinded him. Then he
