- When a person was dying he or she was taken out of the bed and laid on the floor on some straw. The dead person was then laid out on two tables in the kitchen and all the people around the district came to the wake. Singing was very common at wakes and noted traditional singers used to promise that whoever should die first the other would sing at his wake. Each person got a pipe and tobacco at a wake and sometimes the women got snuff. The young people especially used to play games at the wake. A favourite game was "Shuffle the brogue". Each person who was playing sat down on the floor in the form of an ellipse with feet outstretched. One man stood in the middle of the circle or ellipse and his duty was to find a strap that was passed from one(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
