- Nowadays the materials for our clothing are made by machinery but long ago the people made these goods by hand, with the aid of spinning wheels.
There were different kinds of spinning wheels. The small ones were used to make yarn for stockings, socks, and blankets. Then they had a machine called a Weaver by which they made the blankets from this yarn also. For linen goods such as sheets and bedspreads they used a longer spinning wheel for flax.
