    McLoughlin's father and Thomas Farrell's father and grand father were smiths.
    The forges are situated on the roadside. James Gilroy's forge is near the Shannon. The roofs of the forges and made for canvas. There is one fire place in the each forge. The bellows is made of leather. Attached to the bellows is a handle which is moved upwards and downwards when the smith needs to light the fire.
    The implements the smiths use are the hammer, anvil, pincers, pliers, and many others. The smith shoes, horses and asses. He makes the harrows from wood and iron, and gates from iron.
    When he is taking off the horses shoes he sometimes takes them in the open air outside the forge door. The smiths are considered very strong armed on account of the constant practice of their work. There is a wooden door on Tom Farrell's forge and on James Gilroy's but there is no door on Tom McLouglins forge. The smiths repair ploughs and other farm implements.
