- In olden times shoemakers used to go from house to house in the country making and mending shoes for the household. The man of the house used to buy the leather and get the local blacksmith to make the tips and nails and the shoemaker would make the required number of shoes from the leather for the family.
Long ago many old 'many' men called "rag men" used to go about gathering rags and bottles which they carried on their backs in exchange for these rags and bottles they gave pins and needles. other men called "Hucters" went round getting feathers, scrap iron, and horse hair.
