- About a hundred years ago, there lived a man the name of Higgins in Clooncoose in the parish of Cloone. He was known by nothing but the "Poet Higgins". He was almost a hundred years when he died. He could read and write, and composed his songs in English. One of his poems is called

"It happened once upon a time,
As sages tell in phrase suplime,
That Tom Gilheaney stout and straight,
Prepared his pike in "98"
And from Drumkeeran did advance,
To join the Gallant sons of France,
Thus hastily equipped for war
He journeyed on to Castlebar
Where there he showed good Irish play
Before the Saxon ran away.
It made him joyful to behold
The flutters of the Green and Gold
