- One Monday night 18th Oct 1882 on the strand [?] of Faha on the coast of the Shannon only one [?] mile from here a ship was wrecked. The name of it was Daanigon. The sailors were on board and the ship was breaking up under them. The local people were attracted to the spot by noise[?] and a light. The sailors on the ship tied a [?] line with a strong rope attached to the neck of a bull dog which they had on board. This large rope was tied to a rock. The dog was directed to the ship again and in this way the sailors were able to come ashore/ There were twenty of a crew in it and they were all saved. In [the] hours after the landing the ship broke up and the [?] the strand was full of timber and coal. Someone [?] by the name of Isaac McMahon bought the cargo from the authorities. He hireed horses and men to bring it up on the land. He got a [?] share out of the ship with the aid of horses and men but still there is coal in the bottom of the ship there yet. Coal can be got around the strand at the present day.
