- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Kane was the teacher's name who taught in the school. He was from behind Ballina. He went home every evening. School was not carried on in the houses during the memory of the oldest man in my village.
Every child that went to that school had to pay three shillings every week. They were taught arithmetic, writing, reading and grammar.
Irish was not taught or spoken in the school by the teacher or the pupils. The pupils had not books only an English reading book and a grammar book. They wrote on slates with slate pencils. The children were arranged in classes and seated on forms. They had a blackboard because in them days they had no arithmetics and the teacher wrote the sums on the blackboard. They used not buy canes in them days but instead they cut a rod off a tree. The teacher remained fifteen years in the village- Bailitheoir
