with him for his dinner in a tin-can. When he came near the bog he went into a house to light his pipe. He made a dreas of the churn, lit his pipe and brought a coal with him on the end of a bit of iron to the bog. When he went to eat his dinner the can was full of butter. He went to the house and they still were trying to make the churning and had to give it up in the end.
There was an old woman in Aughris and she never churned without throwing a drop of holy water and a grain of salt on it, putting an iron in the fire, and a burnt coal under the churn.
Some people get the water at three mearings every May Eve. They keep it for seven years and put a drop of it in the churn when they are going churning.
It is said that if you sell a cow and if you took a bit of hair off her tail after the buyer pays you for her you would keep the butter of that cow for yourself.
If the milk wouldn't sour when set some people would redden the tongs and stick it into it or get a drop of sour milk from a neighbour and mix them.
We give the butter-milk to the calves and make bread with it.
