- Long ago when people wanted lime for white-washing, etc, they usually burned a lime kiln. The lime-kiln was built of limestone slabs and there was a little gullet in the side to let in air.
First of all, a layer of turf was placed in the bottom of the kiln, over this a layer of stones and so on with turf and stones until the kiln was filled.
A coal was then put in through the gullet to light the turf. The gullet was then stuffed with a wet bag. When the turf kindled the flames burned up(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
