  1. In olden times the people got their ploughs and farm implements made in the forges. Farmers in this district still gets parts of ploughs and spades and gates made.
    They get turf spades made to cut turf. This spade is like an ordinary digging spade only it has a wing on one side. This wing is sharp and it is put on the spade in order to shape the sod of turf. The Laide spades were made in the forge long ago, they are very rare nowadays. The brog and handle were made in one part and were made of timber, and an Iron was sharpened and put at the bottom, this spade was used for digging.
    Gates are made out of Iron and sometimes out of timber. When the Iron is put into the fire and let redden, the Smith is then able to turn it into any shape he like by putting it on an anvil and hammering it.
    Fire-cranes are made out of the tyres of cart-wheels. This Iron is very strong and so suits this purpose. The Iron is also reddened and the different parts are welded into each other.
    Ploughs are not made in forges nowadays but different parts mended and sometimes made, such as socks and culture racks and mould boards.
    On every farm there is a lime-kiln for burning lime. The kiln is a round shape and is about eight feet high, and it is from twenty to thirty feet in
