- My home is situated in the townland of Fortland, parish of Easkey and barony Tireragh. The town which derived its name from a fort in the district is small but thickly populated. The number of houses is approximately thirty four and the population can be estimated allowing five for each family. Mostly all the people are farmers and the houses are typical of the farmhouses throughout Ireland - with an occasional labourer's cottage also. Almost all the houses are one storey, three roomed houses, and the cottages are built in the suburban style. While the population is certainly numerous, there is good reason to believe that the house were not numerous, because the area of the arable land is scarcely one-third of the total area of the district. The other two-thirds is composed of marshy land which can never be tilled. A great percentage of the population emigrated to foreign countries in former years. During recent years the older generation has declined very much. There are but few over seventy at the moment. Some of them can recall the time when Irish was the spoken language of the district.
