spancial round a cow and milk her they had the butter of that cow for the year. There was a man - Mr. John Davidcan of Skreeenbeg, Skreen, Co. Sligo who was able to get back the butter but towards the end of his life he gave up the custom as he used to lose a number of his cattle. The charm was made by writing out in Latin, the Gospel of St. John and nailing it to the bottom of the churn. Then when churning was made a small portion of that butter was kept and put into next churning. This was afterwards repeated, that is a small bit of butter was always kept from last churning and put into next. This custom is observed here still in a number of cases. Some people even still put a small pinch of salt into churning to prevent the "good people" from interfering with it.
