  1. There were very few shops long ago and the people had to go three or four miles to purchase their goods. When they used to go to Mass they bought a lot of goods and it is still carried on. When got some goods sometimes they paid for them with butter, and eggs, or milk, and sometimes with labour. When the people got anything without paying for it they said they got it on tick. The markets were held in the towns. There are pedlars and Jews as they are called, going round buying feathers, rabbit skins, old rags, and old scrap iron.
