- The houses long ago were thatched and they were sometimes roofed with stones. The thatch was made out of rushes and were pegged in with sallies. Generally there was a bed in the kitchen and they were called "pouch beds." There are beds in the kitchens now as well as then. The fires were in the centre of the floor and later they made a fire place in the gable and a chimney in the roof. The chimneys were made of mortar. They had half doors and the floor was covered with wild animals skins. They used logs for fire stuff. The light was a rush candle.
